Welcome to the Department of Geography and Economics The Department of Geography and Economics is one of the three departments within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. It comprises 34 staff members, including 1 Associate Professor (male), 2 Senior Lecturers (1 male, 1 female), 12 Lecturers (9 male, 3 female), 13 Assistant Lecturers (9 male, 4 female), and 6 Tutorial Assistants (all male). The Department is organised into two units: Economics and Geography.
1. The Economics Unit
The Economics Unit provides expertise in economic analysis and development policy. The Economics Unit offers a variety of undergraduate courses, including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative Methods in Economics, International Economics, Money, Banking, and Financial Development, and Money and Financial Policy. Also, the Unit provides services in economic policy analysis and qualitative and quantitative research to support government institutions, NGOs, and the private sector.
2. The Geography Unit
The Geography unit provides a wide range of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Undergraduate courses include Natural Resources Management, Remote Sensing, Climatology, Mapping Science, Population Studies, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Postgraduate offerings encompass advanced topics such as Climate Change and Human Adjustments, Population, Resources and Environment, Environmental Disasters Management, Sustainable Human Development, Strategic Urban Environmental Management, Environmental Conservation Policies and Strategies, Spatial Development Theories, Integrated Natural Resources Management, and Water Resources Planning and Management. These programs support professional services in environmental assessment, climate adaptation planning, GIS analysis, and urban and regional development.
In the 2021/2022 academic year, the Department introduced a new undergraduate degree program in Disaster Risk Management. This program covers diverse and specialised topics, including Introduction to Hazards and Disasters, Climate Change Impacts, Mitigation and Adaptations, Research Methods, Principles of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Drought and Flood Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Measures, Environmental Impact Assessment, Economics of Disasters, Risk Perceptions and Assessment, Spatial GIS Analysis, Gender and Disaster, Pest Infestation Control and Management, Chemical and Industrial Disasters Prevention and Management, Disaster Management Ethics, Disaster Emergency Needs Assessment and Reporting, Disaster Preparedness Planning, Managing Hazardous Materials and Chemicals, Hazards and Disaster Assessment Methods and Tools, Disaster Management Policies and Legislation, Environmental Management Systems, and Insurance and Risk Management. Through this program, the Department offers expert services in disaster risk reduction, emergency planning, and environmental management to government agencies, humanitarian organisations, and development partners.
