Exploring Interdisciplinary Synergies: HKUST Delegation Visit and Call for Collaboration

The Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE), through the Department of Geography and Economics, hosted Prof. Ge Lin Kan and a delegation from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) on 11th June, 2026 to explore strategic institutional partnerships.

Representing the College Principal, the Deputy Principal (Planning, Finance, and Administration), Prof. Pendo Malangwa, formally received the visiting delegation. Prof. Malangwa provided a comprehensive overview of DUCE, outlining the institution's core academic mandates and operational duties, while highlighting key avenues for prospective collaboration between the two

The ensuing symposium facilitated interdisciplinary discourse aimed at formalizing partnerships in research, pedagogy, and bilateral academic exchanges. By leveraging the visiting delegation’s specialized expertise in artificial intelligence, geospatial sciences, socio-environmental monitoring, and gender studies, representatives identified significant academic synergies. This engagement established a foundational framework for future curriculum development, capacity-building initiatives, and sustained cross-institutional cooperation.

At the same time, she actively promotes multidisciplinary collaboration across departments to broaden research impact and institutional learning. During her stay, she will champion grant writing and proposal development efforts to secure competitive research funding aligned with regional priorities. A central component of her engagement is capacity building, including mentoring postgraduate students and early-career researchers in research design, proposal development and academic writing, alongside targeted workshops on GIS, data-driven decision-making and research methods. Her visit underscores the role of academic mobility as a catalyst for knowledge exchange, innovation and regional integration, with expected outcomes including joint research outputs, grant proposals, strengthened programmes and long-term collaboration.
