The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at DUCE nurtures exceptional scholars who possess both imagination and critical thinking skills

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FoHSS) hosts the largest number of students when compared to the students enrolled in the other faculties. The faculty has about 4000 students and 102 vibrant and focused academic staff. It envisions to provide high quality teaching, cutting edge research and community service in Tanzania and beyond. The faculty offers a broad range of subjects taught in secondary schools across the country. It is the engine of teaching a large chunk of content in humanities and art subjects in schools.

The faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses via its three departments: Department of Geography and Economics, Department of Languages and Literature, and Department of History, Political Science, and Development Studies. The undergraduate programmes lead to the award of Bachelor of Arts with Education (BAED) while the postgraduate programmes lead to Master of Arts with Education, Master of Arts in Development Evaluation, and Master of Arts in Public Administration. The faculty also offers one non-education programme; Bachelor of Arts in Disaster Risk Management which is offered by the Department of Geography and Economics.

The faculty also runs short courses including Kiswahili for foreigners teaching methods (Mbinu za Kufundisha Kiswahili kwa Wageni), intensive English course, French for beginners’ course, Chinese course, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). All these courses help to equip students and interested parties with experience packed knowledge in areas beyond content areas taught in schools.

The faculty members are committed to addressing the academic and physical needs of all learners. We prepare committed teachers and leaders ready to make an impact on learning and human development in Tanzania and around the world.
