I take this precious occasion to welcome all our former graduants and those who are soon completing their degree programmes from our alma mater, Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE). As a unit, we always cherish the existing connections between DUCE and all who made this campus their starting journey in their education career. The unit is taking stock the fact that since 2008 DUCE has produced people in academia, politics, business and many other trades. The Unit’s role is to bring on board all alumni in the making of our unified role of strengthening the place we call home. This page is meant to connect, engage and expand our individual horizons. As a College, we are proud of every effort and determination that every single alumnus is taking towards betterment of material life. Our role is to recognise, celebrate and sometimes cheer up those who aspire to do so. Through our online platforms and connections DUCE will reach out to as many alumni as possible.
A NEW VISITING RESEARCHER TO DUCE
Prof Dr. Lucy Waruguru Mburu is a new visiting professor to the Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE). She comes through the Inter-University Council for East Africa Staff Mobility Programme (IUCEA)2025/2026.
Prof. Mburu is Kenyan and an International Visiting Professor for a four-month academic and research engagement. She will work predominantly with the Department of Geography and Economics, contributing to collaborative research and consultancy in geospatial science, including participatory GIS fieldwork addressing locally relevant challenges. At the same time, she actively promotes multidisciplinary collaboration across departments to broaden research impact and institutional learning. During her stay, she will champion grant writing and proposal development efforts to secure competitive research funding aligned with regional priorities. A central component of her engagement is capacity building, including mentoring postgraduate students and early-career researchers in research design, proposal development and academic writing, alongside targeted workshops on GIS, data-driven decision-making and research methods. Her visit underscores the role of academic mobility as a catalyst for knowledge exchange, innovation and regional integration, with expected outcomes including joint research outputs, grant proposals, strengthened programmes and long-term collaboration.

DUCE is pleased to welcome Prof. Izabela Romańczuk, a scholar from Warsaw University. She has come under an existing MoU between our universities. She is expected to spend the whole of this second semester 2025/2026, during which she will teach, present her research on African literary works, especially Kiswahili, and conduct seminars in M.A Kiswahili literature classes.
Prof. Izabela is an accomplished Assistant Professor at the Chair of African Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Asian and African Cultures, University of Warsaw. She specialises in Swahili literature and culture, with a particular interest in contemporary prose by Tanzanian women writers, women’s writing, gender in literature, and cultural and social change in East Africa. She is currently the Principal Investigator of the National Science Centre (NCN) project Digital Transformations and Narrative Innovations: Contemporary Kiswahili Literature by Tanzanian Women Novelists (SONATA 20, No. 2024/55/D/HS2/01146, 2025–2027). We welcome Prof. Izabela to DUCE, a home of educational encounters and interactions with an amazing community of scholars from diverse scholarly backgrounds. We hope her stay at DUCE will be rewarding for our community and enrich her as well. Karibu sana DUCE!
