DUCE Hosts Policy Dissemination Forum on Ending Violence Against Children in Tanzania
The Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE), through its Centre for Research on Child Protection and Violence Prevention (CPVP), recently hosted a policy dissemination forum to strengthen efforts to end violence against children in Tanzania. Held under the theme “Ending Violence Against Children in Tanzania: A Policy Dissemination Forum for School-Based Solution,” the forum shared the Interaction Competencies with Children (ICC) Model, a Tanzanian-led, evidence-based approach that promotes positive interactions among teachers, parents and children.
Speaking at the event, Acting Principal Prof. Amani Lusekelo reaffirmed DUCE’s commitment to teaching, research and public service. He explained that CPVP and the University of Bielefeld, Germany, developed the ICC Model through collaborative research. The model promotes positive parenting, strengthens teacher–child relationships and seeks to reduce violence in homes and schools. He added that DUCE aims to establish CPVP as a national centre of excellence in child protection and violence prevention.
The Guest of Honour, Commissioner for Education Dr Lyabwene Mtahabwa, represented by Basic Education Director, Mr Abdul Maulid, commended DUCE and its partners for translating research into practical solutions. He stressed that research should inform policy and improve service delivery, while children should learn in safe, inclusive and nurturing environments.
He noted that the ICC Model aligns with Tanzania’s education reforms and the National Plan of Action to End Violence Against Women and Children (NPA–VAWC II, 2024/2025–2028/2029). The Ministry expressed willingness to support its expansion, including integrating it into teacher training, recognising DUCE as a national training and dissemination centre, and developing a train-the-trainer model.
The forum brought together government institutions, universities, development partners and child-protection stakeholders, highlighting the importance of collaboration in safeguarding children’s wellbeing.
