DUCE showcases academic excellence and innovations at Sabasaba 2025

The Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) actively participated in the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Sabasaba, held from 28th June to 13th July 2025 at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds. Guided by the theme "Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair: Pride of Tanzania," the event provided DUCE with a strategic platform to exhibit its academic programmes, innovations and community services.

At the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) pavilion, DUCE representatives showcased a range of products and servives to the public. The first booth was manned by Dr. Amani Chipalo and Ms. Theresia Mathew, who provided detailed information about the College’s academic programmes – undergraduate, postgraduate and short courses. They also engaged visitors on admission procedures and highlighted DUCE’s additional services, including its demonstration schools and health facilities.

Other DUCE staff used the platform to present innovative research and community-based projects. Mr. Robert Mushema from the Faculty of Education showcased a project advocating alternative disciplinary methods for schools and homes, targeting parents and teachers as key audiences. Meanwhile, Ms. Eva Nyoni from the Faculty of Science demonstrated her innovation of eco-friendly wood glue derived from cashewnut shells – an example of local resource utilization for industrial purposes.

The DUCE booths, located within the UDSM pavilion, attracted high-profile visitors. These included the UDSM Chancellor, Hon. Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete; Vice Chancellor, Prof. William Anangisye; Deputy Vice Chancellors Prof. Bernadeta Killian (Administration) and Prof. Nelson Boniface (Research and Publications); and Deputy Principal (Academic, Research and Consultancy), Prof. Amani Lusekelo.

In his remarks, Hon. Dr. Jakaya Kikwete commended UDSM’s initiatives to strengthen linkages with industry and entrepreneurs. He was particularly impressed by UDSM’s innovation that allows for determining one’s blood group using fingerprint scans – an advancement that eliminates the need for drawing blood. Dr. Kikwete also emphasised the importance of utilising locally available raw materials in research and innovation as drivers of national development.

Echoing these sentiments, Prof. William Anangisye reaffirmed UDSM’s commitment to collaborate with both local and international stakeholders to ensure that the university’s contributions reach and benefit all Tanzanians.
