Abstract
Enhanced market accessibility profoundly influences household dietary diversification and food security outcomes. By reducing transaction costs for smallholder farmers and bolstering income, improved market access is a potent tool in alleviating poverty and enhancing household food security. In this study, we investigated the impact of market access on food security in Tanzania, utilizing primary data from a sample of 416 smallholder maize producers in Tanzania collected in the Ruvuma Region in 2022. Employing a multistage sampling approach and Tobit regression analysis, our findings revealed a negative correlation between market access and household food security in Tanzania. Additionally, we observed that a higher wealth index was associated with a reduced likelihood of households experiencing food insecurity. These results underscore the multifaceted nature of factors influencing food security, underscoring the necessity for tailored, context-specific interventions to address households' diverse challenges. Such insights are crucial for policymakers and practitioners aiming to devise effective strategies to enhance food security outcomes and foster sustainable development in Tanzania.
